One step: ATP gives its pyrophosphate group to carbon 1 of ribose 5-phosphate
Route: Ribose 5-phosphate → 5-Phosphoribosyl 1-pyrophosphate
PRPP synthetase transfers the two terminal phosphate groups of ATP, as one pyrophosphate unit, to carbon 1 of ribose 5-phosphate. ATP becomes AMP. PRPP is the activated sugar that feeds the synthesis of histidine, tryptophan, purine nucleotides and pyrimidine nucleotides.
