Two steps from serotonin to the sleep-wake hormone melatonin
Route: Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) → N-Acetylserotonin → Melatonin
Serotonin N-acetyltransferase moves the acetyl group of acetyl-CoA onto the amino group of serotonin and gives N-acetylserotonin. Acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase then transfers a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to the hydroxyl group on the ring and gives melatonin. The acetyltransferase controls the night and day rhythm of melatonin production in the pineal gland. Melatonin helps maintain the natural sleep-wake cycle.
