Thymidine to dTMP (pyrimidine salvage)

One step: thymidine kinase adds a phosphate from ATP

Route: Thymidine → Thymidine monophosphate

Thymidine kinase moves a phosphate from ATP to the 5' hydroxyl of thymidine, which gives dTMP. This skips the ribonucleotide reductase and thymidylate synthase steps of the de novo pathway. Thymidine kinase 1 is a cell cycle regulated enzyme with peak expression in S phase, when DNA is copied.
