One step removes the carboxyl group of SAM and makes the donor of aminopropyl groups
Route: SAM → dcSAM
S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase removes the carboxyl group of SAM. The enzyme uses a pyruvoyl group that forms from a serine in the enzyme itself, not pyridoxal phosphate. The product is decarboxylated SAM. It donates its aminopropyl group in the polyamine pathway.
