Aspartate

Oxaloacetate to aspartate in one step: a transaminase moves the amino group from glutamate

Route: Oxaloacetate + Glutamate → Aspartate + α-KG

The same kind of reaction as the alanine pathway, on a Krebs cycle compound instead of pyruvate. Oxaloacetate takes the amino group of glutamate and becomes aspartate; glutamate becomes α-ketoglutarate. Aspartate gives its nitrogen to the urea cycle (in argininosuccinate) and its carbon skeleton to threonine, methionine and lysine in bacteria such as E. coli. Isoleucine comes later, from threonine.
