One step from aspartate: the side-chain carboxyl becomes an amide
Route: Aspartate → Asparagine
Asparagine synthetase uses ATP to activate the side-chain carboxyl group of aspartate; it forms an adenylated intermediate. The nitrogen comes from glutamine, which becomes glutamate. The products are asparagine, glutamate, AMP and pyrophosphate. E. coli also has an enzyme, AsnA, that uses ammonium directly.
