One step: adenine phosphoribosyltransferase uses PRPP
Route: Adenine + 5-Phosphoribosyl 1-pyrophosphate → AMP
Adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) moves the ribose 5-phosphate of PRPP onto adenine and releases pyrophosphate. The product is AMP, with no detour through IMP. People who lack APRT make and excrete too much 2,8-dihydroxyadenine, which can form kidney stones.
